Correct construction for soffit at shingles
This year some cowbirds nested in my soffit. It seems (maybe) the shingles wilted and exposed a hole in the construction.
I notice on the other side of the shingled bottom of the gable from the bird entry shown in the picture, that the diagonal soffit stops maybe an inch above the shingles. Where the birds enter, it is a much larger opening of course.
My question is should the correct construction have been?
Should there be flashing that connects the soffit to the plywood decking under the shingles? Does the soffit just ‘get real close’ – seems like any gap there would allow bugs and potentially invite squirrels to dig a bigger hole.
Another and related question is how should this be repaired?

You might want to take it apart and clean out the nest.
then put it back without gaps, and flash at the top of the shingles.
That whole corner is a mess. But, that looks like the sheathing was cut too short to reach the wall plus they didn't bother to flash it. I think some minor demo then some flashing would solve the problem without tearing into the roof.
