Has anyone used this cost estimation web site, or others (like the free one at http://building-cost.net/)?
I’m looking at this as a homeowner who is looking to build a custom home.
Thanks,
Eric

just hazarding a guess, but at best they will be average numbers, not real numbers.

Yep - that and "Get-a-Quote.net". Got approximations that were nowhere near what I thought and threw them out. If you want a price to work to, pay a quantity surveyor. The best way if you want to see if any contractor is about to start ripping you off.
But, building a custom home is not for the weak of heart - it's a long and arduous task fraught with expensive lessons, divorces, and the like. Since you haven't indicated your actual intention - "I will be building a custom house...every stick, every bit of drywall, every shingle" - I surmise you are only playing with figures right now.
All the best...
To those who know - this may be obvious. To those who don't - I hope I've helped.
What the heck is a "quantity surveyor"? Never heard the term before.+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++"Doubt is not a pleasant condition, but certainty is absurd." Voltaire
Roughly it's the English and/or Canadian term for a cost estimator, though there are other differences as well.
Just for giggles I ran my last 2 houses through building costs.net and found they were within a few thousand dollars of my final number. I wouldn't use it to bid a job but it should give you a ballpark.
