Does anybody have any info about which of the solid surface countertop materies are good and bad. Around here (Maryland) I can find Corian, Wilsonart, Fountainhead, Pallette, and Transolid. And probably some others that I haven’t found yet.

wilsonart is very good, corian is vg & expensive. it is my understanding that you can only have wilsonart install by contractors trained by them. that might have changed.
We've had Corian counters for 3 years now. LOVE them. They were expensive, and, yes, can only be done by the 'qualified installers' - who still had to come back to fix a few half-a$$ed mistakes made by the first set of guys.
We went with an off white, which almost the most inexpensive color.
I have put Corian in my last kitchen and my new one. It is great. I looked at granite, but it is too hard. I know Corian is, but try hitting a granite countertop with the glass coffee carafe. I promise you it will shatter. You would probably get away with Corian. Also if your like your plates and serving dishes hot, to keep the food warm, granite cools things down faster than Corian. I have also heard of granite counter tops cracking several years after being installed. Problem to fix. Hope this helps
