Other than using a carpet runner does anyone have an idea how I can protect pine treads as well as soften heavy foot steps. I don’t like the ones at the big box stores because they are too narrow and thin. Thanks

Maybe glue on pieces of cork?
Danno:
I didn't even think about cork but you did. Great idea.
Thank you
You're welcome. The cork will probably wear more quickly than hardwood, but it should be quieter and I would think it wouldn't be that hard or expensive to replace when needed.
Have you been to a carpet store that caters to a different clientel than a big box store? Runners are often not very thick. Another option is to have the edges bound on a carpet you like, at the width you prefer.

I may use this idea for the entry area for our mud room if the commercial enty mat looks to commercial.
Thank you
Many older homes years ago used rubber stair tread covers. They are still available, I'm sure.
Thanks WayneL5. I will probably go with using cork which someone else suggested although your suggestion is my second choice.
