My customers bought a 15y/o log house, moved in on Monday. They were complaining abt the creaking floors. When the carpet was ripped up today we found that particle board (aka K3) was screwed onto the 2/6 T&G (only abt 12-15 screws per sheet.) Yes there were some gaps where the tongue had shrunk out of the grooves. Now, what ideas do you have, please, to stop those creaks?
on-site suggestions had been to unscrew the particxle board and replace w ply (only plus is that the ply may be firmer than the K3; screw the heck out of the K3 so that it holds the 2x6s more strongly; take up the underlay and crunch all the 2x6s tighter; or………any ideas???
cheers

bridge or block the joists and don't ferget the PL premium when you put the ply down..
Thanks, IM-y. I forgot to mention that the t&g spans over logs @ 4' o/c. One good reason for deflection. But the adhwsive sounds a good suggestion.cheers

Is there any shrinkage between the decking and log beams ?
Thanks for the clue - I hadn't really figured to that...the previous HO had stuck little shims up there, and I'd written it off as pointless. So-o-o, I eat crow, and check it properly.cheers

I'm familar with what you have...
can you tighten up the T&G before ply?.. thats yur squeaks
Kind of what I feared...I guess that there's over 1" of takeup in 4' alone! Tha'ts serious nail removal, eh, as I can't expect the boards to just shif over that much. Tx for tip.cheers

sawzall them off from the bottom side...
is the down side of the T&G a ceiling for show???
Yep, the u/s is open, and the good side of the boards. I think I'll have to pull up the u/lay, extract the nails from the top, and renail. After them being there 15 yrs I think I can safely assume that there will be no more shrinkage (humidity change, perhaps, but that will be minimal). Tx again.cheers
