The wife, my girlfriend two other like minded female adrenalin junkies spent the holiday weekend in Canada rock climbing and kayaking (at least that’s what they said) Gas prices being what they are I ruled out sending them up there in my full sized 4×4 and opted instead to outfit my S-10 pickup with ladder racks for the boats. The truck has a fiberglass cap and I didn’t want to trash it up by screwing something permanent to it. Originally I leaned toward buying a commercially available set such as Yakima until I totaled up the price of the package. Ended up making them from square tubing instead. .

To the rack rails I added removeable attachments contoured to the boat hulls.

Finish product loaded and ready to roll. The racks are held in place by 4 captured bolts, the rail base to truck cap connection is sealed with a rubber gasket. The base floats in the rail tube for easy insertion during installation. When the rack is removed the 4 remaining holes are sealed with a Stainless bolt and O-ring, leaving a clean water tight seal. Install time takes a few minutes.

How did you get your wife and your girlfreind to go somewhere together. If I tried that I would be going it alone permantely.
Actually it's pretty easy, both the wife the girlfriend rock climb and it takes two, one to climb and one to belay. It's a sport where good teammates are few and far in between. Notice I don't climb, really wouldn't want either one of them on the other end of the rope should the mood turn sour. That said they get along very well. The wife picked her out for me saying if anything ever happened she would be happy to know I was well taken care of, apparently I have no say in the matter. Be interesting to see how it goes when they return this afternoon, if you guys never hear from me again you will know it didn't go well.

Nice work. How thick is the fiberglass where you're attached? Nice to see a small pickup with a real bed. Don't understand why you can only get a 6' bed in the Colorado. Progress?
Mike
How thick is the fiberglass where you're attached? The roof section has a 1/2 thick core of some sort molded into the fiberglass. It's really solid, like I can stand on the top. Don't know if they are all like this but this one is built very well. The S-10 I have has a 7 ft 2 in long bed. Not many of those around. I wanted to replace it with the Colorado but the 6 ft. box turned me off. From what I heard Ford Ranger is still available with a 7 ft. box. Seems the mfg's cater to the sports truck crowd giving the tradesman very little choice.
I had a S-10 with a long box, very handy. GM has their head up their ... We call the shorties pen!s trucks, not good for much but dicken around.
My '81 S-15 had a 7'4" bed. Something shrunk

You are so very correct 7 ft 4 it is.
I didn't mean to correct you on yours. I just figured that they changed and took something away. You know how the "new and improved" never is!;)

Yeah, like the chevy salesman told me last year "The new Colorado is the working mans truck of the decade" Like whats a working stiff gonna do with a 5 ft box, haul an extra 6 pack?
ok... wife & girlfriend... all that i get even the 2 other chicks go'n with em i understand...
but with girls like this you just have to wonder why one of them didn't weld up the rack herself....
i know one thing... if i was a chick... i'd have a girlfriend
p
Uh oh... you're a lesbian trapped in a man's body.
If any of you guys have wives or girlfriends who like soup, here's a video for ya' (if the file will upload, lemme see....)
I could of had a shower before that soup was done! She said, "Tell me, are you a christion child?"

hy one of them didn't weld up the rack herself....Hey when you can build things and fix stuff your in demand.
I've got one of the little pick ups for the days when I don't need the big beast. When I got it I figured how much running around I do where I don't need the big truck and decided it would work. In the days of $3.25 gas, I was happier. I would have liked the 6 cyl instead of the 4, but with a used truck, one can't always get what you want.
My biggest complaint was the inability to carry full sheets of material. I looked at one design for the outside racks, and wasn't impressed. Your design seems to work pretty well. What's the treatment on the square tube? Powder coating?
Enjoy the truck - and the women.

I have the six with an automatic, my previous S10, a 4 with a 5 speed didn't get any better mileage than the 6 does. Both were in 26 mpg range on the highway which is 90% of my driving. The 4 did better with no load in it but once the lunch pail and nail bag were added it ended up being 26 anyway, even less if I maxed it out.I didn't have a lot of time so the steel tubes are just painted. Now that I see how well it works I'll replace the two rails with T6061 aluminum square tube.
but with girls like thisI was wondering when one of you guys would head in that direction. All three except for the wife are single, late 30's to 50 range, never been married, all have good paying jobs. All are active and physically fit, none would tolerate a couch potato guy no matter what he looked like. They have all had dates and my male friends try to get me to fix them up. I tell them loose the flab and bury the remote and you might pull it off. I'm in great shape but they can hike, ski, climb and bike me into the ground. I make no attempt at trying to keep up. The only thing I can out do them at is whitewater kayaking and like one of them said it's only because I got the balls to do it. The spring runoff is a blast. When the water is high I go with the guys then when the level drops down to a class 2 I take my little harem our for a run, it's the ultimate wet tee shirt event. I'm lucky my wife is a great sport about the whole thing.

Experiment with the placing of the ingredients on the plate. Try the mozzarella on the left, the tomato in the middle, the avocado on the right. Have fun. Then decide it goes tomato, mozzarella, avocado. Anything else looks stupid.

Thursday I'm off to Chicago to install a project. On the way back I'll stop at the mall and get two boxes of chocolate. For Valentines day I buy two chocolate hearts. At my company Christmas party they are both there. Maybe I'm living in the twilight zone but it's been two years and every one still enjoys the company.

You're living the dream! My wife has also told me who I should have for a next wife if she should beat me to the cemetery. Not a bad choice either, she'd probably be on my short list anyway.
