Just met a guy last night that thought there was a company in NH that would take a blueprint, and turn it into a modular design for you. He said they then build and wire the place off site, truck it to your site and assemble if on top of your foundation. Anyone heard of such a company and know who they are? Also, anyone have any experience with this sort of thing? Pros/Cons?
Best regards,
Walt

we have a company down here doing that, within reason. The Mitchell Company. http://www.mitchellcompany.com/
I think most modular companies will do some amount of customization. Depending on how crazy you want to go though, at some point you aren't benefitting from a cost point.
From what I've seen, I think the modular package as built in the factory is pretty well made. How it's assenbled on site is a different matter depending on the care of the crew putting it together and finishing it.
This guy is a good guy to talk to for more info.

thanks fingers. We are doing a simple carriage house. A small 2 bedroom apt over a 2 car garage. Should not be hard to work up, I would think.
A friend of a friend did the same thing modularly. The site I gave you did the design. The guy's name is Roland Vukic ph. 401 364-0400. Interestingly, he recommended my friend have the ground level stick framed (where the cars are parked) and the modular boxes were placed on top.
It came out quite well and I was impressed that Roland recommended the first story stick framed, cause it would be cheaper even though he'd have made more money on the deal if he sold my friend four modular boxes instead of two.
I'm not sure whether modular construction makes sense or if it even can be done for the garage level of a structure.
That is why your guy did the car floor stickframed.
In our case the ground floor level is inset into an embankment and will be concrete. So modular is not even an option. It would just be the story and a half on top that we are thinking of doing this way. I'm thinking of using one of the bolt together prefab foundations for the first floor.
The theme here is that labor comes are a huge premium in the Boston area...so these techniques may be more economically sound here than in some other parts of the country.
