I am about to begin a custom tile tub, have read past discussions. I am still stumped on the drainage. I planned to treat it like a shower, but how do you plug the drain? I had a plumber recommend a rubber mat, bit I would like it a bit more classy. The 2 piece drain is 2″, which I want to maintain to drain the huge amount of water that will fill the tub.

How do you make a drain plug classy and why is that important?
Gabe
Cover the rubber mat with gold leaf.
*If you don't like the rubber mat, you could go with something like that shown at the http://www.thestoppershop.com/If I were doing it, I would just incorporate a standard bathtub drain with the little handle to flip to stop the water. Having an overflow such as is built into the standard drain would probably be a good idea. With some work, you could probably extend the part of the drain that has the overflow/drainstop lever to whatever height you wanted. They are available for cheap in plastic or can be had for more bucks in brass such as:http://shop.toohome.com/html/products/product_8571.aspThe standard bath drain overflow/drainstop area also provides a way to get the sewer snake into the drain without having to make a right angle bend...
*Can somebody point me to previous discussions on custom tile bath tubs? I've looked, but haven't been able to locate anything. Thanks.
*Is this tub raised? Could you use a nice brass lever valve outside the tub somewhere along the drain pipe?I would probably opt for the tub drain setup with the handled stopper system, besides, this will give you overflow protection. The water will drain fast enough just like in any bathtub with a clear drain.Pete
*kohler sells a foot operated pop up drain, but I don't know if it comes in a 2" size. I have seen 1 1/2" in hot tubs, and 1 1/4" in whirlpool.
