Your right with the masonry blade. Just finnished a fence job on asphalt which we had to cut 1’sq. holes and it worked fine.

I need to cut out a large chunk of an asphalt driveway. I'm assuming that I can break it up with a jackhammer, but I'd like to be able to make a relatively smooth cut along the new edge. Any suggestions?

*Your local rental outfit should have a handheld gas powered saw for this. IT's worth the cost to get a clean cut. I cut out the edges, the knock the center ing pieces. This makes for a much nicer patch when filled back in.
*Depending on how large a chunk, you also may be able to make a pretty clean cut with an asphalt cutting bit in the jackhammer - a relatively thin blade about 3-4" wide, if your rental shop has one. You can cut out a square corner, for instance, which you can't do with a saw. If your large chunk involves a long straight line, the walk-behind saw is better.
*Masonry blade in circular saw works fine for cutting asphalt provided you don't have to cut too much of it.
*I've had sucess using a diamond blade. Costs a bit but works great. Derek
