Hired an electrician to wire my addition. The trusses are set at 16″ o.c. He asks how am I going to provide the attic access. (It hadn’t crossed my mind} I figured to come in from the outside off the porch roof, back of the building.
He said to just cut the bottom cord of the truss and header over between three.
I thought it was unaceptable to cut a truss???If it were a stick built roof I could see doing this but on a truss??

Call the people who made the trusses and have them design you a fix.
In the past they have told me to cut the bottom chord and stick frame the area in as if the truss wasn't there. My truss was a little mono truss of no major importance either.
Call them its their system.
I'm only half as dumb as I look.
i like your solution..
<<<<I figured to come in from the outside off the porch roof, back of the building. >>>
the only reason you need acesss is for code , right ?
and the porch roof is accessable and watertite ?
don't cut the truss
Thanks, thought I was going nuts there for a moment
I did a thread on Cutting trusses for skylights that expolains why that's a REALLY bad idea.
I know you're not dealing with skylights, but this thread covers your situation...
Listen to the electrician. They are experts at cutting away framing members that are in the way of conduit. If you want a second opinion, ask your plumber. They will also have the specialized toolsrequired for the job.

You're relying on the wrong guys. I generally ask the forced air subs to deal with all framing issues like this.
That's great...My inspector made me get an engineers report for some 1" holes my electrician drilled in a coulpe of truss girders.

Bottom line: either the roofer or the sheetrock hanger is who you should contact. Don't waste your time with the elect or the plumber.
