I’m reroofing a small cape in a couple of weeks w/owens corning oakridge pro 30 AR. I haven’t used laminate shingles yet. So, my question is do you need a shingle shear for making all cuts and cutting starter strips, or are you able to cut them easily with a knife?
Just looking to see what others methods are for these tasks. Greatly appreciate any feedback.

Buy the starters or use three tabs, and a shear is a LOT easier, but a hook blade works well.

Instead of a hook blade, I bought a pair of the Yellow handle Weiss snips at Lowes. Trashed the blades cutting asphalt shingles, but they worked great and were only 14 or 15 bucks. Don't know what it costs to rent a shear.
I also have an old pair of malco quasi-duckbills that I have demoted to cutting them as well, I actually forgot. I try to avoid too much cutting of archies, if possible.Spheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks

hook blade works well above ,say 60 degrees.
also use a pair of Malko tin snips with the replaceable blades--the big straight ones commonly used by siders.
Own a shingle shear---use it primarily on 50's/lifetime---rarely on 30's---very handy on walkable roofs where you want to pre-cut a bunch of shingles to stairstep up a 40ft. long rake.
for a one time roof--would not buy the shingle shear.
