I need to cut a prefab laminate countertop in half. I’m thinking of using a circular saw with a finish blade, cutting it upside down and taping the laminate to avoid tear-out. Is there any other way to do this?

You have the right idea, though tape isn't neccesary except where the saw exits the top. I cut the exit edge with a hacksaw, 1/8" deep.If the top has a backsplash, clamp a piece of scrap across the finish side, just tape may not do it.
