I am painting the living room for a friend of mine. It has wood paneling.
She has painted other room with wood paneling and the results have been good. The groves are not a problem.
But the paneling in the living room is different. I have “texture” from pin holes, cracks, and knotholes. They are not big, but I think that they will show after being painted.
I am going to degloss and prime it and that should give us a better idea of how bad they will be. But there are a lot of them to spackle each one.
I am wonder if I could just D-mix the whol wall if needed. I suspect that 2 coats would be needed as the groves would shrink enough to telegraph.
But would it stick to the primed paneling?

I'm not nearly as experienced as some other folks here with DMix Bill, but I have used it and I think it's just the ticket for that application.
Paneling and D-Mix (basically joint compound) are different materials. I can't really say with any certainty, but I don't use joint compound to fill and/or patch wood. My concern is that the 2 materials may have different expansion/contraction rates as the humidity and temperature changes.
For patching wood, I use spackle for small holes (such as nail heads) and wood fill for larger repairs such as cracks and knotholes.
If you do decide to go this route, I would prime all surfaces first to better ensure adhesion of the D-mix. Joint compound will stick to primer, but it may not stick well to painted surfaces.

Unless I'm mistaken this D-mix concoction is for skim coating walls, not for filling holes.
I guess I would have to see it to make the call, but I would not put joint compound on top of wood paneling. If it's nail holes you're filling, then use something stronger and that was made for nail holes like wood fillers or the spackles they have for that.
Hi Bill.
The d mix can fix the mess behind the panels.
By the time you degloss and prime the panel, you can remove the panel and apply the d mix on the drywall.
But if you don't like to remove the panel, after the primer I don't see a problem.
Apply the first coat with more plaster of paris.(3-4 times more)
good luck.

"By the time you degloss and prime the panel, you can remove the panel and apply the d mix on the drywall."I know, but unfortunately I wasn't given that option. But the d-mix is only a backup. My friend doesn't think that the defects will be that back and they are small.
