I am replacing an old fiberglass roof that covers my patio this summer. I plan on using a colored tin roof. Is there anything anyone can recommend putting underneath it to dampen rain noise.
thanks,
Mike

Man, I love that noise. Now hail, there's a racket.
Add a drop ceiling and insulate.
*Put indoor/outdoor carpeting on top of it.
*Seriously? That bright green Astroturf stuff?
*No, Astroturf was invented to provide orthopedic surgeons with a revenue sharing device in professional sports. Eastroturf on the other hand is that green stringy stuff found in Easter baskets. Incidently there is brown Astroturf, in case you want your fake lawn to look like you don't water it, but I have never seen green Eastroturf. For rain absorbtion on a tin roof, I would suggest the stuff that looks like really thick felt and is available in a variety of colors. Considering the long term exposure to moisture on the roof, the best kind would be that used in boats. However, now that you mention it a real grass on the roof would work well to stop rain noise, too.
*A sod roof I think it's called. Good insulation too.
*What about the dead loads from the soil coupled with the live, rolling loads of the mower. If this roof were big enough you could use a rider.Homasote board will work well too, on the top or bottom.-Rob
