Send them guys to Wall Street!
Couldn't believe it when I saw it. Went looking for the hose-bib to draw water when I was laying a tile floor in one of the condo apartments, and found that. Hooooly Birdbrains, Batman!
Can you top that?

How did that pass inspection? It's time for a REAL change. Hobbes & Opus in 2008.
How did that pass inspection?
This is a 'city' of less than 6,000 full-time residents, most of whom are seasonal workers who have an annual income under the national poverty line.
But the company that owns that condo development pays over $40 million in local real estate taxes to the city council annually.
Any other questions?
BTW, I like your tag line. View Image

SO when do you hit the road to NY???
SO when do you hit the road to NY???
As of the date of your question, 'tomorrow' morning at 11am (ie: Friday). Sorry; the night before and morning of departure I was too overloaded with unfinished business to log on to BT....
Got back Monday night. Tired, happy, and not too much poorer than when I left (I got lucky and collected a full load of 'paying' passengers besides Ryan from the karate school; covered the gas for all of us). But between this trip and the one out to David's this summer, my 12,000km guarantee on the truck is almost shot. Only got 2000km left to go. Sigh....
Saturday Ryan and I visited my grandmother's grave--the dojo we stayed at is literally right across the street from the cemetary. No one has been to visit since 1992, when my mother and I buried her there. It was kind of sad to realise there is no one left in New York to visit; and I am the closest, both in terms of distance and emotional connection. The vines had overgrown the gravestone almost completely, but I'd called the cemetary on Wednesday when I realised how close we'd be, and told them I'd be visiting. They sent a crew out to clean it up. (Grandma did, after all, pay for 'perpetual care' in 1944 when her younger son was killed on Saipan.)
Ryan made a very strong connection to her, though, and insisted on paying for the chrysanthemum I wanted to plant at the grave with his own money. It was a good visit, and afterwards we went off to tour New York City by ourselves (the rest of the children had gone with the other parents and coaches as a group). We visited Sally (Ted was out at sea) and had pirogies for lunch; rode the Staten Island Ferry; did a quick run on the subway; missed (by literally two minutes) taking a sail on the Pioneer, the 123-y-o South Street Seaport Museum schooner on which I used to crew; got stuck in gridlock in Chinatown; drove through Rockefeller Center, Fifth Avenue, Hell's Kitchen, and Times Square at night; and had a 'tailgate party' while parked illegally on Sixth Avenue, which consisted of sitting on the tailgate of the truck eating pizza and drinking cherry sodas. (Passers by, in true New York fashion, ignored this 'weird' un-NY behaviour, in a well-practised manner....)
Sunday was the karate competition. He got a third-place trophy for his 'weapons' kata and two medals for unarmed kata and single combat.
I got very little sleep (the dojo where we dossed down was in the same building as a very loud Salsa dance club/bar, and right under the EL), but the children didn't seem to mind....

"Can you top that?"
Maybe. Next time you are in Montreal, if you walk down the lane behind Durocher Street the condos positively bristle with satellite dishes. Most are mounted to the roof parapets, but on one particularly crowded roof some installer drilled several into a brick chimney. A large portion of the brick overhanging the rear exit is now held up by coaxial cable, and the slumping dish mostly covers the flue.
Unfortunately, it was my Father's condo building.
Fortunately, I sold it this summer.
lol . . . reminds me of a trip to our zoo early summer. Jack Hanna's hometown zoo, no less. They added a revamped water park and an amusement park during the winter. Some heavy rains created a lot of ponding in the landscaping.
Any guess where all the outdoor electrical outlets were located?
Any guess where all the outdoor electrical outlets were located?

Almost. All were mounted on poles a couple feet above grade for holiday lights to connect to. And the poles were often set in the low end of swales and depressions. Perhaps to make them less noticeable.
Little islands of 'lectricity . . . think i'll stay away from the zoo this March/April.

The rubberised BX seems to be; I suspect it's an illegal take-off to power lighting in the parking area. But the conduit and box coming outta the building is original (all the buildings are the same)...and it's directly under the hose bib.
Got any Darwin Award contenders out your way?

SWAG, but maybe there is a heat trace in the downspout drain ??
it's just that the silly looking thing looks very similar to something for connecting power to HT cable FWIW the white thing is watertight if it is in fact HTI agree it's a really poor location but there aren't too many elegant or cheap options for terminating HT to power although a larger J box is available from the Mfr. .
.
.. . . . . . . .
If by 'heat trace' you mean a heating coil to melt ice and snow, yeah, I suppose it could be. There are no wires visible on the roofs, but there could be some in the gutters.
Nevertheless the power connection for immersed heating wires should be above the highest point of immersion. And certainly not right under a hose-bib....

I guess we shouldn't expect quality for only $4.7 million.... :(

My fair city is methodically going around town and installing HC ramps where side walks meet curbs.
At one intersection they cut the curb, and poured a ramp to accept those textured pavers. they ramp was built to a respectable 1 in 12 pitch for it entire 4 foot length.
Then they cut out the adjoining sidewalk section and repoured it so that it would reach UP to the new section of ramp.
Wish I had a camera handy. they tore it out about a week later and removed the unnecessary hill.
So at least they fixed it.
Those textured pavers used in the handicap access ramps are the most insane idea I have seen yet. My elderly Mother uses a walker with wheels in the front. Because she cannot get the wheels through all those "bottle cap" bumps, she chooses to navigate around it by lifting her walker up over the curb to one side.
Why isn't the handicap community raising a fuss about this supposed improvement?
Not to mention that less than 2 months after our local install of new ramps and cuts, those little bumps on the textured pavers metled away. That's a lot of money spent for an impact that disappeared in 2 months. A year later then installation looks like its 20 years old.
I have half a mind to send a letter to the DOT, but it would take another 2 years to get into the right person's hands, at which time they'll probably already have torn out the installation to do somehting else."It depends on the situation..."
Speaking of ramps at intersections, we've had a few added to our street lately. Apparently the ADA rules require that when a street is improved, ramps have to be added, (and also because they put in a sidewalk so kids could safely walk to school).Anyway, there are some rather steep hills in our area, and this is a picture of what the curb cut wound up looking like at one of them. There is a path coming up, and then there's a steep ramp up to a ramp down. It makes sense given that there may be more sidewalk connecting at the right at some point, although how that will intersect with the path beyond is a bit unclear. But for now, it looks pretty goofy.

Kids on skate boards are going to love that !
Wasn't there some major city airport built in Italy, with no bathrooms?
LOL, when we were coming back from Ireland, I went thru the half hour customs and security check, then to the end of the concourse, where I discovered that they had no bathrooms out there. The only ones were on the other side of security and it was nearly an hour before departure.Anybody with prostrate misbehavior knows what I was feeling. After fidgeting for 5-10 minutes, I knew I could not wait - no way! So I reversed directions and did it all again, managing to get back with the group just as the plane started loading! But I guess I was wearing a red hallo because my erratic behavior set me aside as a non-typical traveler and thus subject to additional searches and questions. They finally let me on the plane well after every body else had boarded

Once again, this shows that codes are no substitute for common sense and a sense of responsibility.
True; the problem is that these days, common sense is far from common, and a sense of responsibility is as rare as four-leaf clovers in Nunavut in January....

Was doing millwork in a fieldhouse for Carthage Texas High School football team. They were trying to get a C/O with no vents for the 6 gas heating units and no fresh air ducts either.
Oh, and no vents for the gas water heaters either, so it wasnt just an HVAC screw up.
Thank god the country bumpkin inspector didnt pass that.

The interstate here has a really good fence along it- steel posts five barbed wires. This last summer, in a hilly area by some grassland where deer run up and down a draw, a contractor for the state pulled the fence up and replaced it with steel guardrail posts and a single cable. Looks expensive.
I asked the contractor why the state was doing this. He didn't know for sure, but said there has been some high profile lawsuits. His theory was if a fence obviously couldn't stop an animal from getting out on the interstate, then the state couldn't have any responsibility if one did.
