I saw that the newest issue of FHB features the best way to attach a deck to a house with siding. What’s the best way to attach a deck to an existing house with a brick veneer when the band board is not accessible for a carriage bolt? I could lag bolt through brick to band board or would lead anchor with lag bolt in the veneer be enough? From the article I can formulate a good flashing detail.
I don’t want to make deck free standing so posts at house are not an option.
Thanks,

I think you would need to do both. Depending on the condition of the brick it might support the weight just fine. You would need to lag into the rim joist to keep the deck and the brick from pulling away from the house.
Seems like it would be best to drill large holes through the brick and insert bushings for the lag bolts, so that the ledger pushes against the bushings, not the brick.
You also need to evaluate the strength and support of the brick to decide if bearing (vertically) on the brick is OK. A tacked-on brick job with just a piece of angle iron supporting the brick may be too unstable to withstand the relatively "live" load of a deck, and old, crumbly brick may also be a problem.
