Deck fasteners and flashing

nkhandyman | Posted in Construction Techniques on August 18, 2006 03:42am

Replacing my deck planks (2×6) with 5/4 PT. I saw on THIS OLD HOUSE where Norm used dabs of marine sealant to hold down the 5/4 planks with added SS ring nails sspaced every other joist. I have an area about 350 sq ft and will probably use SS square drive screws.

But just wondering, does Norm’s method seem plausible for a large deck area ( exposure is afternoon sun in RI) If it where you , what type of fasteners would you use on a this project?

The sealant will eventually dry out and let go. Don't believe everything you see on This Old House. With your PT decking SS fasteners are highly advisable and your idea of square drive deck screws is what I use, two per joist.

What is to dry out? Have you used it?http://www3.3m.com/catalog/us/en001/auto_marine_aero/marine/node_GSWWSBSW85be/root_GST1T4S9TCgv/vroot_GS4JK4Y166ge/gvel_QH8HT14PGTgl/theme_us_marine_3_0/command_AbcPageHandler/output_htmlIt is a curing product and not solvent based.

No, I haven't and I won't. Are you telling me that you would glue down decking on a client's house? I see no need to take the risk on something like that, since there are plenty of good ways to permanently attach decking.

I'd read some of those threads when they came up. Success after 5 years is not success. I was just at an elderly man's house where a guy remodeled the kitchen 16 years ago and put in some windows inside-out. Seriously, aluminum-framed picture windows, installed backwards. The cost implications of this for the owner are significant. He would have been better off if the work lasted him 30 years.

Anyway, I always have Vycor over the joists so I couldn't use adhesive anyway. Reports are that few finishes stick to ipe anyway, so I'm not sure how well any adhesive would do.  Sounds like it does work for some people.

I would use hot dipped galvanized 16 casing, drill for each nail with a high speed drill, and put them in with a palm nailer.

Something to think about with the screws. When the wood shrinks back and the screws won't turn (instead break) what can you do? I have seen that problem.

I have never seen a deck fall off or squeek with the 16 galv casing. And it looks better to me. (also, we clamp them as tight together as we can get them and they shrink to a 1/8 to 3/16 gap)
