I’m sure there must have been a string on this, but I tried searching for “deck joist spacing” and found nothing.
Existing deck is 8′ wide with a ledger board and 2×12 joists on 47″ centers supported by 6×6 beams.
To enable replacement of dug fir deck boards with GeoDeck composite, I am adding extra joists on 16″ centers. With 7′ spans, can I use 2×6 or must I go to 2×8?
Thanks in advance

Thanks for the link. Since I am in CA, I found a similar website with data on the species available to me.http://www.awc.org/calculators/span/calc/timbercalcstyle.aspIt shows that for 100lb/sqft live loads at 16"oc I need 2x8 for my 7' spans. (actually good for up to 8' 7")Thanks guysBruceT
Snow country winter live loads?
I'd build with 2x8, but in the south, you might be able to get by with 2x6

Go big or go home! Just kidding I would go with the larger joist just because of the weight of the decking itself is soo much heavier than dried out wood.
