Gonna bid a deck cover this week–12’x16′ shed roof on 4 posts out at the gutter end on piers and bolted to the deck framing.
Question is this: The eave is too low for a ledger on the house, or to the fascia so the member the rafters will hang from must sit on the asphalt roof above.
What are common ways of doing this? Is there such thing as a stand-off bracket made to carry a 2x or 4x header up there so that you can still use the house’s gutter ? I picture something with ‘narrow’ feet that can be lagged thru the roof into the rafters that will allow drainage around it…
I see structures like this sitting on the roof but they don’t appear to be fastened a lot of the time.
??
Also, I’ll use Suntuff Poly roofing. Is std. lumber OK out in the open but under the suntuff or is treated or cedar preferred?
Thanks,
Pat

That sounds exactly like the sort of situation where I'd rearrange things.
If the heights are that close, I'd just stop off the existing gutter, rather than try and build it in.
But, it sounds to me like it really needs a different answer. If the house has long overhangs, you may be best off opening the soffit & removing the fascia, and extending a "proper" roof from the existing building. Now, that's going to be a bit more work, because, I'd probably not tie the outer end of the aroof to any existing deck, but to some foundation system as rigid as the house's (decks not being quite so permanent a thing as a house).
Another thing to look into would be to cantilever both ends of the cover's rafters, that can help with a low beam height at the low end of the cover. Also, think about not bringing the pattio cover all the way back to the wall for full weather-tightness. Since this is a deck, if the conditions are blowing rain up under the edge, it's not likely ideal conditions for sitting outside in the first place. If bug-proofing is a concern, that can be adressed with window screening.
Eugene gets a wide-enough range of all the weather the PNW has to offer, so I'd be hugely leary of any fastening through an existing roof.
