I’m about to install a very small deck (4’x6′) to replace one that rotted out. I’m using one 4×4 post in one corner (the other coners are supported by the house and an existing beam). I’d like to continue the post up past the deck to become part of the railing, but I can’t find any detail pictures or descriptions in my deckbuilding books of how to do this. They all suggest running the post to the underside of the deck, then bolting new railing posts to the outside of the deck once its mostly done. I’ve seen this many times and rarely been impressed by the rigidity of the final railing. Any suggestions on how to use the deck post as a railing post?

when you set your posts make then high enough for the railing as well, place the rim joist around the outside as normal, before pouring the cement, then do the decking and then the railing as usual
only tricky part is cutting the decking around the posts, a jig saw will do a nice job
You could also use a 6x6 and let in the rim boards to the post.
