I want to build a roof over our deck, but the deck is cantilevered 2′ out from the post and beam support. Should I remove the 4×4 corner posts and replace with 6×6 posts sitting on the cantilever or should I run those 6×6 posts all the way down to concrete piers 4′ deep in the ground under those outer corners? My instincts tell me the latter.
