Hello
I’m planning a deck near an outdoor swimming pool and am looking for guidelines as to setback distance the posts need to be. This in ground swimming pool has only a liner in contact with clay and sand with a 2 foot concrete walkway around perimeter. To complicate matters the deep end is where I’d prefer to cantilever the deck. I’d imagine that footing would need to equal depth of pool and that work would only commence once pool had been drained. Would base need to be enlarged also? Has anyone had experience with deck sinking due to tear in pool liner? How would chlorine pool chemicals adversely affect this deck? Thanks for your replys

Your climate has a bearing on this answer - re how deep the frost one runs.
I see no reason to drain the pool. This type pool is designed so that you fill the pool as you backfill the soil perimeter with a marine plywood form to shape the walls.
Drain the water out and there is a possibility the load of the surronding soils will push the walls into the pool hole.
Much more needs to be known about the soils under the deck proposed and the size/shape of the deck to answer about the post supports

Also how far back there might have been oiverdig or fill from the pool construction. Assuming that it is fairly new.And to the OP you can cantilever the deck. Either the joist or the beams. And typically 1/4 of the supported without getting too complicated in the design..

Good point, sometimes a lot of junk goes into backfill perimeters
