I’m building a 12′ by 38′ deck along the back of my house. The joists span out from the house (12′) and the decking will be laid down parallel to the back of the house.
I have often read that you should slant the joists (and therefore the decking) downhill away from the house by 2 or 3 degrees. This is supposed to encourage rain water to flow away from the house and off the deck.
I am, of course, spacing the deck boards a bit. So I would expect the water runoff from the roof of the house to fall between the first few boards and never have a chance to run “downhill” the rest of the way to the edge of the deck.
So, do I need to slant the deck or can I just make everything level?
