hello everybody,
a client asked me to build a raised deck around her above ground swimming pool. i’ve built many of decks before but not around a round object. i have done round canterlevers on ends before. i want to know everyones opinion on wether the decking should be above the to of the aluminum cap with a big rounded over edge detail, flush with the top with a smaller round over (1/4″), or below (about 2 1/2″) the aluminum cap. i think i’ve nailed all the framing details down it’s just the decking issue i question.
thanks to all

Not too many pools here so I will only adress this theoretically.
What is the deck material? I would not want any exotic oils or preservatives to be leaching/dripping into water that I or my family were swimming in. Keep in mind that clorine can change some properties and advance corruption of others.
what is the base of the pool? is it solid as mt McKinley or more like Krakatoa? If the pool and the deck do not move in usinson or neither at all, then you want them independent of one another. In other words, you would not want the pool heaving up and lifting the deck from under it.

It will be easiest to run the rough-cut ends under the pool flange, but then there's that 2-3 inch step up. Running the deck flush and butting against the flange (actually with an inch gap) takes some good cutting, but works well. Running the deck over the flange would be my last choice. If you had to removew the flange to change the liner, then the boards are in the way.
Whenever you are asked if you can do a job, tell'em "Certainly, I can!" Then get busy and find out how to do it. T. Roosevelt
Tough call, I would frame as close to the pool as I could and make the decking flush with the flange. Is it possible to frame it so you could have a removable perimeter edge in case you need to replace the liner?
Keep it flush for the ease of getting in and out of the pool.

When I was a kid we had an above-ground pool which we built a deck around. We (brother and I were Dad's helpers) made the decking flush with the top of the pool. Mistake! A big part of the fun of the pool is running and jumping. Just when you got to the edge of the deck you stepped on the plastic coping at the top of the pool. Then over time as the deck and pool settled differently there was a lip at the pool.
We often wished we had run the decking out over the pool; leave at least an inch of clearance between the underside of the decking and the top of the coping. BTW, our deck was pressure treated; years of kids with bare feet and water everywhere and no problems yet. Well, except that third arm growing out of my brother's head. Just kidding.
