Has anyone used a TEBO Decker? Is it any good?
I have a deck to do and instead of running the decking diagonally, but not all the way. I will run decking around the perimeter, like picture framing it.
Would this tool work on this technique? At 50 cents per staple, it gets pricey.

Tashler,
I have no personal experience with the TEBO but try http://www.spotnails.com/tebo_tips.asp . The picture shows diagonal decking install.

I do almost all my decks (usually fir or cedar) with one, and have had great success. I also run a border of some sort so no end grain shows. You need to be aware of how the Tebo works and where it will fit so you can frame accordingly. Even with creative framing though, it has its limitations, and I use a combination of Ebty and other tricks around the perimeter. I also use PL Premium polyurethane construction adhesive under everything. This all makes for a beautiful deck, but it is time consuming and fussy. Hope this helps, Daniel
Hey macmillan,
Thats some beautiful work!
If I may, can I ask a few questions?
1. Do you space the boards for drainage or are they T & G?
2. Do you finish them with anything? Thompsons? Poly? Etc?
3. I see you are in Maine. Do you have any problems with weathering?
Thanks a bunch. Mike
Hi Mike,
Thanks, those were fun projects.1. Do you space the boards for drainage or are they T & G?Yes I space about 1/4", those cedar pictures look tight because the wood was wet when i installed it, then it rained for a few days.2. Do you finish them with anything? Thompsons? Poly? Etc?Most of my clients who want cedar are happy with the look of it when it weathers to gray, some of them have used a clear sealer quite successfully, i can't remember the name of it but i could ask if you want to know. Every prospective client I have shown the first deck I built with that cedar railing has been sold on it.3. I see you are in Maine. Do you have any problems with weathering? My decks have stood up very well. I pay a lot of attention to detailing, spacers between framing and trim such as skirt boards, sticky backed Shingle Starter over any doubled up framing, etc.Hope that answers your questions, Daniel
Daniel,
Thanks for the info and reply. You're quite the craftsman...Keep up the great work!
Mike
Beautiful work. That's the kind of work I hope to do someday.
Do you screw down the border at all, to towards the outside edge or do you have a hiiden way?Do you glue down every board to the joists? Why?Do you use biscuits on outside corners?Do you like EbTy? I've never used them, but my friend says that since they are plastic, they are likely to freeze and break.Unrelated question- When you are trimming doors, do you use biscuits on the casing? To me it is old school and I've never known anyone to do it, but I like the idea.Sorry so many questions, I'm trying to make up for 10 years of lost experience.
beautifully done Mac!just one more question for ya
supplier for base material you use w/ those 6X6" posts??
If you mean this post, it was a reproduction railing I built for an historic house and I had a few of the railing parts I couldn't easily do myself made by a local millwork shop. I was able to get close enough using knives he already had. sorry, the photo loaded twice, and I couldn't figure out how to delete it.
Hey Tashler,
Do you screw down the border at all, to towards the outside edge or do you have a hiiden way?I generally have to run one course of small head ring shank stainless nails around the perimeter.Do you glue down every board to the joists? Why?Yes. It makes for a deck that still feels and looks good ten years later, no squeeking boardsDo you use biscuits on outside corners?I did once upon a time with polyurethane glue, now I ease the cut ends and space them a bit like the edges.Do you like EbTy? I've never used them, but my friend says that since they are plastic, they are likely to freeze and break.I've never had any problems with them other than getting ahold of them. They do require a bit of finesse to seat properly. My decks take some time and patience to build, they aren't for the faint of wallet.Unrelated question- When you are trimming doors, do you use biscuits on the casing? To me it is old school and I've never known anyone to do it, but I like the idea.I've been known to, depends on the style of trim. Thanks for the compliment, Daniel
Beautiful........Excellent work.
Now if I were to draw details like that on a decking job, I would be referred to as the "freaking crazy archi from he11"
Thanks! I probably shouldn't tell you then that this railing was a reproduction of the original, except I mortise and tenoned every piece together. It sure was fun, they just call me "a piece of work"
I gotta ask. On this balustrade, what is the joinery method for fixing the small horizontals (the top two rows under the handrail) to the spindles?

Gene,
I'm not macmillan and don't want to speak for him but I can tell you the joinery method from where I'm sitting includes some fine craftsmenship and alot of patience! :)
Mike
Mortise and tenon, it is actually a http://www.woodwayproducts.com railing. They make quite a nice product, not cheap, but well worth it. The stair rail you need to make yourself from a kit, and I just use stainless brads and some poly glue. This is the creative solution to trying to get both stairs out of one 8' kit and being 1/4" too short.
can you help...

We still own a tebo decker ran through a few boxes of the fasteners three or four years ago, didn't like it enough to keep using it. It's gathering dust in the trailer.
Unfortunately I don't, didn't have a camera at that point.
Wow, very nice work, nice detail, happy customers, I'm sure, what's not to like?
I would go broke bidding jobs like that because nobody in my market would want to spend the money.
Makes me feel like an exteme hack!
Grunge on.
Becareful about the picture sizes, if they are large sizes, the people with dial up connections cannot open them. If they are part of the post like yours, they cannot open the thread.
Pretty work Mac. Copied the pics to show my Deckman.
