Client is talking about putting a pattern in the new floor tile of the main entry. The field tile will be 18″ travertine, and she is thinking about insetting a compass rose or similar. Where can I find a pattern for the rose? I have seen a picture of it in a tile book, but it is an oblique angle and would be difficult to scan. I would really like to have something dimensioned, or even better an Autocad file 🙂

Look on a nautical chart. Take it to Kinkos. They will blow it up to any size you want.

Yeah, that's the look (depending oin the actual pattern)...but I don't have a nautical chart. Guess I could buy that boat I've always wanted...that would be a good excuse to get a chart.

If you find a picture you like and don't have a printer, download it, copy it to a disk, and take it to Kinko's or wherever. Here's a nice one I found on the second page of results.

After I posted the question, I started searching and found some interesting stuff. Quilt patterns, for example. And there's an interesting page from Canada 99's (apparently some type of auxiliary pilots group) that has detailed instructions on how to lay out a compass rose on a runway...a bit larger than I need, but very informative.

Many tile manufacturers offer custom tile pattern setting. They will waterjet cut the pattern and mount the pieces on backing for you to install. You would still have to give them a pattern to work to, though. Check the commercial side of American Olean.com/ design services.
