Some time ago I broke my back. Broke bones, lost the soft disk, etc. One of the guys I was working for kept most of my tools. Claimed he didn’t know what happened to them. I couldn’t very well get out of bed and go throttle them out of him.
While I won’t be going back to work as a carpenter, I am working toward getting a small shop back together to make small cabinets and furniture. I am on a small fixed income, and cannot afford to buy new tools.
My dad gave me a tablesaw a couple weeks ago. While I won’t deny this is a toy compared to my old saw, it is what I have in hand to work with. It is a Delta 36-540. Someone apparently ran a sheet of plywood through it without fastening the table down, and also apparently jostling the plywood back and forth while pushing a bit too fast. The end of the motor, (where the brushes are held), went through _major_ meltdown.
The saw then sat outside for a couple years. It is badly rusted, etc. I have actualy had fun starting the rebuild of this. I cut away much of the melted plastic and basicaly rebuilt that end using JBWeld. (Many glue and form sessions.) After putting it all back together, it works !! Next, I’ll take the whole cabinet, table, fence and inside assembly apart, clean, sand, grease and once back together, it should work as well.
The one problem I have is this… One of the brushes ended up hanging inside the motor body. It got ‘carved’ into pretty much of a pencil point. When put back inside the corrected brush holder, it has mostly been worn back into proper shape, but I am concerned about what will happen when I actualy put a load on this motor. I expect the brush to be worn too small, and/or it will shatter. The other brush is not exactly a gold medal winner either.
Being out here on the side of the mountain, I cannot just run around to some local motor rebuilders. I have so far been unable to find a source for the proper brushes. Anyone here have info about where I can get them ?
