For you framers and structural engineers, here are some plans for a shed dormer. Right now I’m kicking around ideas with a structural engineer and some framers on how to build this, but I am still waiting on a final answer.

so will this construction take place in conjunction with the attic remodel and insulating thread?
The dormer roof will not be steep enough to accept slate successfully, but you'll wind up with a lot of salvage for future repairs.

Yes, it's all one project. We'll have to go with a rubber roof over the dormer, and just tie in the slate on either side of the dormer.
According to my calculations, your existing roof structure is undersized for a slate roof, even without a snowload. Where is this house and what is the design snow load?
And then you're going to create an unbalanced roof, with a center wall (which may take some roof loading) offset at least 20" from the load path below it.
Make sure this gets properly engineered and framed, or you're asking for trouble.

I'm in the Northeast. With the pitch of the roof, I don't think snow hangs out too long up there, but it could be a concern. I've already been thinking about installing something to break up the snow, as we've had some pretty large clumps of snow falling off the house.
Be careful which design you use forthis.
I would select ones that are fastened directly to the roof deck, not those that are retrofits and are attached just to the slates.
