Detail at fiberglass shower stall flange
For the first time ever I’m looking at putting in a Florestone fiberglass shower stall. It has flanges that nail to the studs and presumably cover with sheetrock (no tile in this bath). Curious how others detail this… furr out the walls by the amount of the flange and then run the rock over the flange and into J-metal? Then caulk? Any tips appreciated.

I have done exactly what you described on a few jobs, and in my own shop. The older units I furred and used j-channel on had sharper inside coners on the nailing flang, than the one I put in the shop. They turned out acceptable, but not impressive. The shower in my shop has more radiused corners and the j- channel has to be held above the radius to keep from rolling out at the bottom. Leaves a larger caulk joint at the dw/shower intersection. Looks like poop. I am going to cut off the j-channel and add a bullnose tile edge around the shower unit.
Definately furr out the wall to the thickness of the flang. I have found that 1/4" plywood or luan ripped to 1 1/2" works on most of them. The thinner luan works on the cheaper units. Better units reguire the full 1/4" thickness of plywood.
