Determining roof pitch for proportionate
I am building a sunroom over an open porch on the gable end of my house. The room is 13 feet wide and 10 feet deep. The main roof is a 12 pitch. Is there a common school of thought on how much pitch a roof should have in order to look proportional to the room? I’ve seen roofs that look so steep in relation to the size room they are over they look like they belong on a church and don’t seem to fit the rest of the building very well. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Usually all pitches on a house are the same, but it's really a judgement call. You have to draw it out and look at it. If you post a picture here of what you're talking about I'm sure you'll have no shortage of helpful advice.
Thanks for the reply. I appreciate the advice.
The roof pitch that "looks right" also depends on what style of architecture the house was built in.
Thanks for the advice. I'm new to this and have to ask a stupid question. I really appreciate the help and would like to know if online ettiquette dictates an e-mail of thanks to each person who responds. Again, I know it's probably a dumb question but I really appreciate the help and don"t want to be rude. Thanks again
No problem -- happy to help. If you could post a picture, I could give you some specifics, of course.

Ragnar
You can just do a one size thanks all post.

I will bne like the other guys and suggest that normally you might have it be 12/12 to match the house, but I think your concern is with the feel of the cathedral ceiling from inside, and I suspect that you might inpinge on a window in that gable end wal upstairs witha 12/12.
there is a whole world of information that we do not have about the overall scope and style here. Ther eis no rule of thimb except within certain styles sometimes.
All I can add now is that it is possible to frame withscissors truss so that you have a different pitch on the roof from what you use on the ceiling.

i think this screened porch is 12x12 and the house is 32" wide

Thanks for the advice and the pic. Looks like I have some drawing to do.
Houseoffeternalperil,
Well I broke your rules.. My main house has a 17/12 pitch and the entryway has a 27/12 pitch. Most compliment me on the house because it fits the type of design (English tudor)
The nice thing about a 12/12 pitch is how easy it lays out, 45 degree cuts are simple to make and simple to join.. It might be a bit steep to roof then roofers complain if it's too steep or too shallow or flat! ya' can't please 'em. <G>
