Bought a “refurbed” Dewalt 14.4 V XRP (3 speed) driver/drill as a backup about 4 mos ago ($139 at Toolcrib)
Pulled it out to drill a 4 1/4 ” hole for a dryer vent (needed the 1/2 ” chuck for the hole saw) thing would not engage, motor screaming ….. no chuck movement.
Called, took it to dewalt repair ctr, just got it back. Seems ok except the 21 position torque setting did not work in 1 speed. I called dewalt, and rep told me that speed #1 was “_alls to the wall”, and that the torque settings are for speed #2. #3 just for drilling. Sure enough it works that way, but the book says nothing about this. Just #1 for max torque, #2 for driving, #3 for drilling etc….nothing about the torque settings only working in speed #2.
Q. Is this unique to my now twice refurbished gun, or is there a grain of truth in what the rep told me. (my other drill is a dewalt 2 speed, no mystery there)

I have the same model, though I bought it new or "new" from a catalog. Same problem with torque setting. I have simply learned to live without the torque setting, as screwed up as that is. I also see no advantage to 3 speeds. But, it is a durable drill.
Also, have you noticed that the three position switch is nowhere as smooth as the older two position one was?
Seems it always stops in between gears.
yep.
it's not a drill i'll buy again, but it works.
I agree. Since I am in the same boat, I'll just grab a paddle, take the bow, quit my bichting, and get back to work.
Shame though. I really like the rest of my yellow stuff.
Just got a 14.4 impact driver-he he (the wife thinks it's the same new drill). That thing is SWEEEEET and more than makes up for this PIA drill. Also LOVE my 705 saw w/ the thick kerff blade.
