Alpinist | Posted in Tools for Home Building on September 30, 2006 06:08am

Folks, I want to get a 15g nailer kit for finish carpentry and this looks like a good deal.  Is the compresser noisy? How plasticy is the nail gun- Air tools are harder to get here in the UK. Thank in advance.

    Hi alpinist,

is this the kit you're talking about?

    from here

at £219 it looks like they are trying to get rid of them;)

could be worth a punt, personally I wouldn't yellow guns have a bad reputation.

If you are having problems finding guns on this side of the Atlantic have a look into buying from the states and importing them. The exchange rate at the moment is quite favorable, plus guns are a lot cheaper over there.

I've imported all but one of my guns and after shipping and import duty I have been saving between £50 and £200 off of the price I'd be paying over here.

Yes, I want get an air set up for first and second fix but mostly the ones available are mail order and expensive so it is hard to evaluate how good they are. How do you import yours?

It's pretty easy to import tools I mostly use ebay shops for convenience. Once you pay for the tool and shipping (for a nailer expect to pay between £35 and £45) the delivery companies do the rest. Once the parcel gets over this side Parcelforce pick it up and pays the import duties.

Then they will either deliver the packageand ask for payment of the import duties and a handling fee, or they'll send you a letter advising you of the charges and you pay over the phone. (I usually expect to pay between 25 and 30% of the cost of the package)

for example this is my 15g nailer

two other things that are worth considering, the reccomendations of breaktimers IMHO are one of the best ways to decide on what to buy

also if you use firefox to browse the web you can download an extension called VeiwMyCurrency which automatically converts any currency on the webpage to pounds stirling.

Thanks for that, the other available one is this from Rutlands.

Probably not as good as The Senco though! I am in London.

I've ordered quite a lot of things from Rutlands and I've always found them very helpful,

My only peeve with them is they sell senco tools (the compressor and the hose in that kit is senco) but they don't carry the nail guns.

I guess you've not seen this kit

            bostitch kit

            from http://www.buckandryan.co.uk/index.php

I have a bostitch gun (not this particular one) and it's a solid performer and I've never had a problem with it.

it's a little more than the dewalt and dakota kits but you have the added advantage of having the shop fairly local, good for repairs and any warranty issues also you can get your hands on it before you shell out any cash.
