I just bought a new DeWalt 744 10″ portable saw at the Sears hardware store for $299. Is this a good choice for home repairs etc or is this a weak saw
mass produced for Menards/ Home Depot? It is still in the box and I can still take it back. Any advice from professionals?

I'd suggest you actually plug the thing in and see what you think. Over the internet, we really can't tell how the saws balance feels in your hands! Just give it a try, a nice thing w/DeWalt...the 30 day no-Q's return. Jeff
*Jeff, You been smokin' something son?? This sounds like some kind of a portable table saw to me! I hope he's not trying to balance it in his hands to get the feel....
*$299!!! thats a great saw buddy! it advertises for $499 at the tool crib (w/stand). i have used that saw a lot, it has ample power for basic cutting. i did find, however, it ran best with a thinner kerf blade; but it cut great once i found the right one. The best feature of course is the R&P fence system--best in it's class!! i'm gonna go check out my sears hdwr.
*Ahhhh....maybe it's even the same one I have in the back of the van! Hey, if so, the cheapest I've seen it for is $500. What store was that??? Ya know, you'd think the 10" blade might have tipped me off! No wonder my hand gets so tired carrying that thing around all day......but it is a great saw! Jeff
*Jeff yup it is a 10" DeWalt DW744 table saw and I fastened it to a 32" high table with a 15X20"hole in it for the saw dust. The store I bought it at was the Sears Hardware store $299, in Lansing Illinois. They still have a new ones in unopenned boxes like mine. The saw weighs about 70lbs. and it is big for a portable table saw. It has a 2 1/2 HP motor.RG
*Richard, I live in the west suburbs of Chicago and the Sears Hardware there has them there on sale untill Sept.30th for $299. That is a great deal, regular price is $499. It's $499 most everywhere.Ed
*Hmmmm....Kinda makes you wonder what the markup is on tools these days.
*Yup, same saw that's in the back of the van! You'll love the fine tune fence knob, and the quick change fence from side to side. Nice to pop the fence off to carry it too. Jeff
*Richard,We have three.......nuff said.They are OK.....but, they have their limitations.Ed. Williams
*Must just be a Chicago thing. I checked my local Sears Hdwr. and it was still $499. Oh well.
