I think I killed my dewalt miter saw on a bunch of pressure treated wood.
Just started hearing a rumble in there when she starts up.
I’m guessin’ bearings. Is that a difficult DIY job.
Been a great saw. A real reliable workhorse for what… 5 or 6 years anyhow. I’d just as soon fix it as the newer models of the same thing don’t feel the same when I try ’em out in the stores and outside of this new rumble she still was cutting true.
be sawed

heh heh no, that was an old craftsman 'motorized miter saw' that I had to use for something instead iof just letting it sit there year after year.

That's a;lmost funny. I once had a roll of 4" foil faced self adhesive rubberiuzed flashing tape, and I needed it cut down to 2". Talk about a gummy mess ...

I'm about to find out myself. They aren't expensive:

There was a discussion here recently about that saw cutting square to the left but not square to the right. I think it was Piffin said that it's the bearing - a known problem after a few years. Worth the repair IMHO - great saw!
I always thought that it would be handy to have two saws set up with different blades.
Think it's a good time to get a new Bosch with the dual miter deal.
Will repair the Dewalt tho'. Please let me know how the bearing replacement turns out as I'll be trying it.

Ya, I think I blew it cutting the wet PT with the miter.
I was thinking no big deal just sacrifice the blade. Now I know. be hating when that happens.
That's ok, I don't borrow tools anyhow and keep my junk ones to lend out when needed.

I thought this was going to be about a big gang fight, where guys lined up behind their favorite color tool, and had it out with framing squares and nailguns.
Yadda yadda yadda
I wanna use that auto fire Bostitch nail gun from those other threads.
Need an ammo handler tho...

Probably better not to run it until you fix it. Especially if it's geared, a bad bearing can let the gears mesh wrong and put a lot of wear on them in a hurry. I don't know about the saws, but the DeWalt drill I have uses straight cut gears, and always sounds like it's falling apart.
-- J.S.
I made prob a dozen cuts after it first started the rumble then it wouldn't start when the trigger was squeezed unless I tapped on the housing.
I had to make just 8 cuts shortening two chairs and the whole job was done and I was out of there so I wanted to leave.
The blade started revolving more slowly and wasn't constant and after the 4th cut she wouldn't start no mo' at all regardless of tapping or not. Now she is dead full time.
be I hope I didn't screw the pooch.
Did you read the appliance thread?
Do what you can do for her and thats all . Dont send her to a shop and put that kinda money in it .
Tim
BT has grown too big to follow it all anymore.
I wouldn't bother taking it in anywhere but if I can fix it for the price of bearings or whatever I'd give it a try.
be wouldn't want to spend money unwisely. Someone might call me goofy.

I have a 12" DW miter that I got maybe 14 years ago - got it back when the 12" first hit the bog box stores. A few years after I got it I did what you did - cut a bunch of PT wood - and it started a low rumble sound. Not loud - but easily heard by an expierenced user. I've still got that saw. Never been fixed. Now it is my knock around PT, etc cutter... I have a good one for molding and the like.
I'd just keep using it and not worry about it...
Edit: woops - I didn't see the part where you said it died....
So what did you see when you checked the brushes? And, how does it feel/sound when you rotate it manually?

According to the ToolPartsDirect.com web site the most commonly ordered parts for these saws are the brushes and the outer bearing (the one by the brushes). I figured that since the S&H was the same regardless, I ordered both bearings. Ordered Tues, received Thurs by the cheapest shipping method.
I took the saw apart tonight and sure enough there was a fair amount of play in the outer bearing, and some on the inner. Now all I need is a bearing puller - LOL!
Might have burned out the armature. You can test for opens with a multimeter. You can also test for shorts from one winding to another. A shorted to itself winding is sometimes possible to test, sometimes not.
It was just the brushes.I removed both for inspection and one was fine, the other looked as if somehow it must have gotten partially wedged as the spring was way compressed/stretched and twisted out of whack. I played it around to some facsimile of normality, put it in and she's running back up to snuff.Still got to get the dualmiter slider tho', now that I talked myself into one.
And that slick Fein multi-tasker many here say is indispensable.
be Well, and as long as we're window shopping...
Rez, for less than 30 bucks, replace that brush -and- it's holder/carrier... NOW !You'll be happier in the long run. Don't ask me how I know. And get an extra brush and holder to store away for later.
Yadda yadda yadda
Cool :-) Maybe I need to check my brushes. The DW factory store is right on the way to work for me.
I always have to remind myself that when something doesn't work right, the first step is to disassemble for inspection. Maybe the hesitation started at a very young age when I just had to take apart my first watch "just to see what's in there" :-) This was back in the days when all watches were wind-up. I got this vague memory of some springs and stuff coming out and me wondering where they went. OR - maybe that was when I first learned - if it ain't broke, don't fix it.... :-)

Luka- my thoughts exactly but will prob do both and hold the old in reserve for an answer to Murphy:o)No, no, no, no, no! I've got the same saw, probably 10 years old...1st 5 years I'd burn up a switch a year, and never at a convenient time. I'd have to ride over to the B&D place Matt's talking about, 2 hr round trip...last time over I bought 2 switches...I don't even know where the spare is now, but that saw knows I've got it... I need a dump truck, baby, to unload my head
Well ya, I burned up the switch a while back and replaced it. still ok so far. so go ahead and concern me a bit like I should be carrying a spare switch now.:o0
I was talking about brushes earlier.
be ya shoulda taped the extra to the saw somewhere
