i am putting cedar shingles on a 650k beach home …the framers of this home do not own a builders level which has caused me a real pain in the neck with soffitts running an inch out of level over 20 feet…
i have had almost all the windows re-installed because they were either installed out if plum/level or set at different heights..
upon finishing the the shingles around the big front window the trim guy notices the upper window 1ftx7 is installed backwards…thats the third one..
so i take the top and bottom trim off (so not to tear of my perfectly set and caulked shingles) and get the sawzall out to cut the flange of one side of the window…as i cut the flange…HERES THE KICKEER…my blades wanders and the bottom and cuts the vinal casing of the now outside of the window..did i just by the window?

Were the owners of the home or the G.C. made aware of the problem caused by the poor framing before you made your customizing? If you can't make it work, seems to me there better be something like a window in that hole real quick or someone's gonna want to know where their window went. And they'd be mighty generous to just pat you on the back and go buy a new one for you.
I always, always always tell the homeowner if the work of someone they hired is going to cause problems with our work that may require iffy modifications and get their agreement to proceed in writing first.
I also tell my subs to let me know right away so I can do the same as above and not end up owning or getting blamed for the results of someone else's bad work.
this is one of those spec homes being built by a non builder...the GC was fully aware of the window problem and the other problems...the thing is is he was going to send the same hack crew down from the city to fix the problem...i could just see me comming back to that job on monday with all my trim and shingles hacked down chainsaw style..
Ringshank....
ROCK > YOU < HARD PLACE
Been there, done that, I really feel for ya buddy. I can only say that this all depends upon your rapport with the GC and their level of integrity regarding how much effort they want to put into getting the hack framers to cough up the cost of making this situation right. Of course something tells me that their business ethics are every bit as stellar as the quality of their work and most builders just won't want to put forth the energy to engage in that fight when there is a perfectly culpable dupe, ( you) who will take a lot less effort and headache to squeeze that cost out of.
Good luck my friend!" If I were a carpenter"
I wouldn't have touched that window. As far as I can tell you will probably end up paying for it, or at least arguing to get paid for your other work. If the builder's crew tore up your trim while changing the window then you would have a completely solid case for being paid again to fix it. Now that you damaged the window you're on thin ice.
No good deed goes unpunished.... remember that always.
".the thing is is he was going to send the same hack crew down from the city to fix the problem...i could just see me comming back to that job on monday with all my trim and shingles hacked down chainsaw style.."and I'd have him pay for your time to fix it, plus materials if they are supplying materials. And I'd demand a deposit for that time prior to climbing on a ladder. If the hole isn't too big, I'd go the route DanH said, I was thinking it was something you absolutely couldn't hide, but if you can make a workable fix, maybe you can quietly. Just realize that if it leaks and they take out the window and you're still in town, they might be calling you.
well the GC? if you would call him that, is letting me off the hook... i guess he realizes that this is just a small f up compared to the rest of the problems he has had hiring cheeper than the other guy contractors..i called him as soon as i made the cut, because i know it takes about 8 days to get a new window in and if i could get it ordered by friday i could save him and me a few days of bull..this kid dont cut and run i live in this town...which is small and when #### hits the fan they guys who really give a crap will still be busypeace thanks
"this kid dont cut and run i live in this town...which is small and when #### hits the fan they guys who really give a crap will still be busy."Absolutely, is what I say all the time. Just seems the sh## hasn't hit the fan yet as I still hear about them and run into them.
I mean I hear about the ones who don't give a crap. maybe I should get back to work or go to bed...
So you hacked up the window chaimsaw style???"The truth, when told does nothing but bolster a mans character."
Heck, caulk the hole and call it good. Sounds like it won't be the worst thing wrong with that house.
