Hello again. I’m still siding the house but have started researching the veneer stone I’ll be using on part of the front of the house. They recommend a double layer of tar paper under the lath. As you guys know I’ve had the house wrapped in tar paper for a few months and as I ‘ve been going with the siding I’ve been putting a second layer on top of the first. The second layer does not lap under the first layers but is rather an entirely separate layer lapping only itself at the seams (don’t know if that makes sense). The stone manufacturers specify two layers which lap each other as opposed to being separate. In my case this isn’t possible if I use the existing layer. Do you guys think it will be good enough if I just put a separate independent second layer on top of the old like I’ve been doing? Thanks.

You're doing a small enough area so that there are no seams with a second layer?
Should be no problem.
The installation specs are usually written like this:
"Attach the building paper in horizontal strips. Start at the bottom and overlap 2" (like
shingles)."
sure, y not ?
could be they just assumed both layers would be installed at the same tme
do they spec a tie system for the veneer ?
No tie system. They say two layers of tar paper followed by wire lath, a scratch coat, and then the stone. The area is not covered by one piece of paper. I have the paper going up the wall lapped 2" at each horizontal seam. I want to put a fresh layer over the old again lapped 2" at the seams but not tied into the first layer. In other words ignoring the first layer and just applying it a if it ws bare plywood. Thanks.
Here I go again My computer crashed when I tried to send the last post
Hold the horses. Synth and veneer is just like a thick stucco and needs to be treated as such.
The 1st layer is the water barrier and needs to be sound and flashed in properly at every penetration.
The bottom needs a weep screed just like stucco (to allow the water out at the bottom)
The 2nd layer is necessary as a bond breaker between the 1st layer and the scratch coat otherwise the scratch coat will bond to the 1st layer and not allow the thin drainage layer between the scratch coat and the primary layer.
2nd layer doesnt matter for anything other than bond breaker. (you could use craft paper from a technical sense as it would work as a bond breaker (so would newspaper I recon) but I always use felt paper. (it will get wet so I dont want a mold prone product)
If you dont understand this, research stucco and check out Building Sciences Corporation as they have good details as well.
If you get this right, it will last long time, if not, it can get ugly!!
Good advice there.
Too bad you can't read the latest JLC. (the original poster)
That's fine. The reason for the 18" lap typically is that it is easier to install that way when you do it all at one time.

Excellence is its own reward!
i just looked at a house where the guy ran out of money... he stucco'd most of it but did sections in manufactured stone... he did a really nice job and if you didn't know he had to because of funds... you'd think it was by design... prob 30% coverage on the stone 70% stucco... looked old english? maybe... anyway turned out nice... maybe better than if he'd had the money to do all stone...

Thanks again to all. Great advise as usual.
