Distance between gable valley & ridge of roof for gas stove vent (6″diameter/400CFM) ?

What should the distance from the roof ridge and valley be when installing the exterior venting part of a hood vent?    Right now the ideal location is 2 feet away from each.  This is the ridge  and valley of a gable.  Roofer says stay 4 feet away from each (ridge and gable). If I follow roofer advice then that would make my total run longer than the manufacturer recommended 30 ft vs 15 ft.
