Sand through where abrasion would normally occur. I have done Kitchen cabs that were sprayed red, then a green coat ( for example) and sand through around the knobs and such, sharp transitions...then a topcoat of shading lac and a clear coat.
The BEST advice I have is do SEVERAL mock ups, experiment, and write down your steps to the final "OK,That's IT".
Fine sandpaper. Start with at least 400 under a dry tilesetter's sponge.SamT

Excellence is its own reward!
I did a really great piece not long ago.
We were given this very Italian looking big dresser thingy...I hated it.
I used a knife on the front corners as well as a little hatchet..used a guage as well every here and there.
I bought two different color milk paints. One was a red I used for the base coat. Let that dry and then I used a black for the top coat....rub the top coat off in strategic places wher eyou'd normally see wear and tear like near knobs and handles and edges...It really looks incredably authentic...everyone thats ees it really thinks it an antique.
I've also used wax...I've rubbed on wax in strategic locations then paint over the whole piece...then go back when its dry with steel wool or some 150 grit sandpaper...the paint comes off nice and wierd where the wax is.
I found two coats of different color milk paints to be the very best!!

Here's some examples using milk paints..
You can store what you don't use in the refrigerator over night because it won't keep after you mix it up and it ain't cheap unless you make it yourself which isn't really worth it. Its around $30 a quart. Comes in powder form.
I love mik paint.
I got mine on the internet

The stuff is great but you can't really strip it with conventional stripper.
It really does have a comfortable look to it though and the colors are very quick and vibrant. I've done some decorative painting & stenciling with it.
Here is one I did. After it was done, painted it dark brown. Then rubbed softened beeswax on the places where it should show wear. edges, tops of drawers etc, and some random places. Then painted it all the yellowish color you see. then took a plastic scouring pad and rubbed the "wear" places to remove the yellow, so brown showed thru. When happy with it painted it with flat waterbased clear varnish.

Thanks--was wondering how all those dishes were staying on the shelves, was thinking heavy duty museum mounting wax (or whatever they call that stuff)! Time for more coffee!
