DIY’er needs advice on how to remove …

| Posted in General Discussion on March 13, 2000 11:28am

I am a dot yourselfer wannabee who wants to create a cathedral ceilinged living space in a single stall garage addition on my 32′ by 24′ cape.

Since I am a better web designer than a carpenter, I have a great web site that you can look at to see what I am trying to do. As you will see, the web site looks great, but the room is a mess. (Let it load for a few minutes, and then roll your mouse over the blue arrows. If it is working properly, you should see a photo taken from the angle of the arrow.)

The site is at: www.cyberwrite.com/pool/diagram.htm

How do I remove those ceiling joists without the walls falling down? I am willing to consider any suggestions, but the more open the space, the better. Are there steel rods that I can use in lieu of the joists? Could I run a laminated beam down the ridge of the roof?

Please help….

Thanks.

Very impressive site! How do you do that? Wish I could help you. No experience id doing what you want to do. I have some ideas but you would be better served by the more experienced builders that post here. Interesting project! Post some pictures when you are done.

*....cool... the span is 23' =/-... so, i wud normally try for a structural ridge, the load is the snow load for the roof, go to a lumber dealer and have them calculate a structural ridge in LVL... also...i guess you;re going to put the lap pool in? right?so i would drop a cathedral ceiling at apx. a two pitch lower than the upperpitch (s)....b where is this... your climate will be a big determinant in your strategy of how to handle that moisture.....one of the things we recommend is an automatic pool cover.. makes it easier to heat.... and has better control over the humidiity...keep inspection access to the attic area ...you need either a continmuous soffit vent and a Shingle Vent II ridge vent or you might buy into some of the No-vent strategies some of these other guys like...the non-symetrical roof is just ducky....but the spans are not out of the question for a structural ridge carried by the gable ends... you will have to provide sufficient support to transfer the ridge to the foundation...here's what i wud do for the ceiling...5/8" blue board with skimcoat plaster... no penetrations.. furr the ceiling 16"OC.... 6 mil vapor barrier, continuous down te walls, 1" foil faced Polyiso foam board... tape all the joints..18" cellulose insulation tapering to whatever you can design into the eaves...baffles at the eaves to carry the ventilation from the continuous soffit vents over the cellulose to the ridge vents...moisture control with central air (mostly for dehumidification).. and a heat pump for space heat...two ceiling fans at the peak .. independent of the heating system..... i wouldn't run any return duct in the attic space you will be creating... maybe some supply ...you gotta big moisture problem with a lap pool... you need a vapor barrier with meticulous attention to detail....
