I install a prefab oak floor of Bruce flooring. Seems as good as the old fashion way of nailing, sanding, and finishing. Except those exposed ends. Should I polyurethane? What happens when they get wet? Will the plank swell (they are of course in a kitchen). Any advice?

when I've installed prefinished hardwood (I've done a few) I usually butt the ends up against an end-cap of some sort. Often I would machine the end board (which runs perpendicular to the rest of the flooring) out of the longest pieces of the prefinished flooring so that it acts as a reducer (if necessary) to bring the hardwood flush with carpet (for example). Sometimes I would have to rip off the tongue or fart around with the profile to get the pieces to fit against it, but once it's sorted out, it's an easy go. That way I never end up with exposed end-grain. To tell you the truth, I'm not really sure how you ended up with exposed end-grain...
I believe that putting any other finish on top of the factory finish will void any type of warranty they may offer, so that's something to think about...does yours have the bevelled edges? That's hard to get used to, but it's the way they make it!
Because of the fact that the finish doesn't bridge the cracks b/w each board, water can get in there, so be careful to clean up any water relatively quickly, and clean it with a damp, not wet, mop....

*I assume you mean the butt joints out in the middle of the floor. The Bruce installation instructions don't mention any sealant, but now that you mention it,a quick brush of polyurethane sounds like a good idea. I can't see how it could hurt anything.
*In that case, would you consider sealing the whole underside as well? If you have the time and patience. Ron, how do you find those little bevels?
