I am renovating a 100 year old American Foursquare in the Chicago area. The exterior is stucco over lath. I am converting a section of a large pantry into a powder room. All plaster and lath have been removed (I’m looking at the back of the exterior sheathing). The question is… should I insulate the walls, if so, do I use insulation with or without backing. I have read and heard discussion that walls should not be insulated without vapor barriers because insulation traps condensation, then promotes mold and rot.
