Our toilet needs multiple flushes to work.A plumber said that they wear out from the constant abraision of the waste being pushed through. He has found it cheaper to replace the toilet than to power rod the line – assuming that every thing else on the line drains properly. Do toilets really wear out?

Not that I ever heard. The symptom of multiple flushes for a toilet that used to work just fine is usually the jets are clogged. Look under the rim and you will see many small holes, these are the jets and they are angled to create the swirling action that helps the flush. They often get clogged with deposits from your water. Take a coat hanger, straighten it out and ream the holes, you should see the deposits fall out into the water. The reduction in the hole size does two things: stops the swirl and decreases the velocity of the flush.
If clearing the holes doesn't do it, check a few other things, is the main vent clear so the water isn't held back by suction ? Is the main drain obstructed ? Have fun .
*Ditto.I do restoration work, and buy a lot of used (antique) toilets. I use bon ami polish, and some mild muriatic acide for the jets. I replace the flapper, valve, and handle just for shits and grins. The only thing that can't be fixed is the flange and the bottom of the toilet. If it is cracked, then the toilet is essentially dead.
