I have never had a problem with the sanded grout scratching the slate. I have had a problem trying to remove all the grout haze from the cracks in the slate despite using sealers and grout releases. This is not a terrible problem but it can drive a finicky person crazy.
Ditto on that. I installed slate on the floor of an entry way and kitchen and had no problems at all. Slate is pretty hard unlike some other stone like marble or limestone. I can also attest to the grout cleanup with ungaged slate- it's a bear. And don't plan on coming back after the grout has set thinking that a haze remove will get it because it won't.
