Listeners write in about haunted pipes and building-science tomes, and they ask questions about roof venting and roof leaks.

I've seen some that don't that look worse.
Hey, I just got back from meeting with a farm manager concerning slate on a barn and Main house - probably 200+ squares.
They had a new barn built (the copper gutters are still fairly shiny) and a lot of the slate is breaking. I didn't have my camera, but it looks like they're butted too tight to me. The roof looks really wavy. I always leave a small gap between slates (nail width), but these are jammed tight. Is that the problem?

Nope ,
you can't nail slates too tight .
When I'm laying them I work them sideways so side pressure helps hold them as well as the nails .
Get some pictures if you can , I'd love to see whats going on !
Grant ,
Most likely poor quality slate that was installed by people not used to putting on slates . Overnailed , not sounded for defects , trampled on , jacks not wide enough , and other issues .
Walter
Yeah - I forgot the camera. These slates look like they're overlapping at the sides, heaving the course above up. Like I said, I always leave a slight gap between them. I've never seen them pushed so tight together before.http://www.quittintime.com/ View Image
Grant ,
Theres no reason not to lay them tight , but obviously you don't want them riding up over each other either .
Love to see some pictures of whats happening .
Hows this for apron / gutter on a Mansard ?

looks like someone got a little trigger happy with the foam around the window too... wanted to make sure that didn't leak too?
it only leaks when it rains
Mike ,
Can you be certain of that !
We've had over 8" of rain in June here , getting calls left and right.
Walter
if it's leaking and it ain't raining... call a plumberMike Hussein Smith Rhode Island : Design / Build / Repair / Restore
Mike ,
Great advice as always . How 'bout adding some pictures to your thread or are you waiting till we beg ??!!
There's a house in town that has the slates painted white, but only on the areas near the roof edge. I'd take a picture but there's probably a shotgun trained on anyone who gets near that place.
Different way of finishing off the edges I guess .
