does your rack howl ?

| Posted in General Discussion on May 17, 2000 06:02am

Just put a material rack on the new truck along with a cab high utility topper I’m wondering if you others with the same set up have that irritating buzzing that starts about 30 35 mph?

hollow D-Rung ladders on my rack hum like a kid blowing on a pop bottle, but the rack itself does not howl. Of course the removeable rear bar will rattle a bit if the rack is empty, but since it has only been empty once(while driving home from having it installed)it is not a problem.

*I had a rack that howled. it had a flat plate that was attached to the front. I don't know what it's purpose was, but it buzzed.I've had ladders that hummed. Hell I have a whole concert going on up there.I once had a piss poor ladder rack. I looked out the rear view mirror to see my ladders flying through the air with the rack still attached!blue

*So that was you that tossed that ladder rack right in front of me (while doing 85 down the highway!)Nice ladders. I use them all the time now. Had to leave the ladder rack on the side of the road though. It was a piss poor ladder rack indeed. Did I mention that they were nice ladders?James DuHamel

*Read somewhere if you inject low expanding foam in the rungs of ladders it will help with the whistle.

*Personaly, I've been known to howl at a 'rack' or two. But I've never had any howl back at me.

*I worked for someone who had a new rack installed which howled something fierce. he determined that it was caused by the gap between the top of the truck cab and the cross member of the rack creating a "whistle effect". had a welder add approximately 4" to the height of the rack and presto! problem solved!

          7. Mark_"if_I_were_a_carpenter | May 03, 2000 06:22am | #11

*Wow! I sure wish I had the sense to check grammer and punctuation before posting!

Thank God, cause Ive posted some real unintelklibgiblle dooozz;lkjies.i If I was a carpenter, and you were a ladyi would you marry me anyway?, would you have my baby? That song reminds me of my first job, picking (throwing?) strawberries when I was 12 - listening to AM radio in the fields. Worked all summer and made about 50 bucks.jl

*Jim , Old is a state of mind. Especially when a Ted Nugent tune comes on the radio. It might be a tumor.... "It's not a tumor!":o)

          14. Paul_Hanson | May 15, 2000 04:10am | #18

*When I moved my rack from a Chev van to a Ford van it developed a howl that it never had before. I tried moving the rack fore and aft to no avail. After listening to me complain about it for a couple of months, my sixteen year old son taped some foam pipe insulation over the square cross bars. Problem fixed.
