Here’s a pic of what I had to deal with today. I guess the HO phone went out last night after the insulators finished putting batts in the basement ceiling. A wire was crossed/shorted somewhere, so three hours and a new toner later it works again. More than half the wires were dead yet still connected. Oh well, at least I got to buy a new tool!

That looks like a typical phone company installation to me. It may be a litttle neater than most.

Dont call the phone co. to put in phone lines either.Their spec for burying the line go on for 3 pages inc. stuff like 36" deep , lay line on bed of 8" eider goose down. cover with 24" of pure white madagascar beach sand ect ect. When they did our neighborhood they buried it about 6" deep in the state road ditch line.Every year the grader comes and rips the guts out of it.So now with 6 splices. computer speed 1100bps and a signal that sounds like ur talking to zimbabwe 25 years ago. We finally went to public service commission and they put the lines on poles.Didnt cut a rightaway just wove it thru the tree branches which is fine asethically but were waiting for first ice storm.
I agree with SamT. The typical phone co installation was a rat's nest similar to what's in the picture. I think in a way they almost intended it to be intimidating, back in the days when they told you you couldn't do your own wiring.
