OK, I just finished making a screen door for the house. Its made of some nice beech I had with square lacewood plugs mortised in. I am looking for a penetrating type finish to go over the stain I applied.
I thought about a tung oil / varnish blend but wondered if Penofin wiped on well. I’m looking to pop the figure and grain and don’t mind re-applying an oil finish each year. The door is under a porch but does get lots of late afternoon sun.
Any suggestions?

Thank you.
Would you use Penofin Ultra on the exterior of doug fir doors? I have a front entry and a garage entry to do, both protected by a breezeway roof.
I used the Penofin (cedar color) on the breezeway floor deck and like the result. I've enough left over to easily do both doors with two coats.
I don't see any reason not to. Doug Fir is a hard dense softwood, the only thing is I'd do a test on some similar to see if ya like the look..the difference between late and early wood in fir can be both striking and extreme.
On larger panels that have been glued to size, often not with a clear finish in mind..the grain can be loud and disturbing..when I make a door I account for the visual effect even if it is to be painted..cuz someone ,someday may strip it.

Thanks. I'll go with the Penofin. These are clear VG doug fir (at least the veneers are).
You got it right Waterlox...
But if you want to up the antie over that that use RexThane1 from SW...
Or if you still want to do better go with KEMVAR or AQUA-KEM.. These are products from SW too.......

The Waterlox Marine finish is not a penetrating tung oil, it lays on. It's for brightwork on boats, and it is tough stuff. I've got it on a South facing unprotected door, and it works, but like like any finish in the weather, you'll have to keep up with it.
Regular Waterlox is mostly tung oil, and does penetrate. I've got it on all my covered fir doors. Very easy and low maintenance, plus it's got that nice oiled look.
Don't know nothing 'bout no Penofin<G>
Don't worry, we can fix that later!
You like the WaterLox... Look into Rexthane1 or Kemvar from SW....

Jeeze, just tryin' to get around the site made dizzy<G> Fumes?
http://www.Sherwin-Williams.com/search/search.asp?qu=rexthane&ct=SWP&q1=@Contents+rexthane
and they say the stuff's for floors, not doors...see, fumes x-( LOL

WaterLox is MCU... So isn't RxT1... I think RxT1 is a lot tougher than WL..
SW's tech department says if it's wood, painted surface, metal or CC go for it...
RxT1 was developed for airplane hanger maint floors...

Bet it'd be killer on a porch floor! Tip o the hat to ya<G> Don't worry, we can fix that later!
Been using it on places that have lots of youngin's, pets and heavy inconsiderate traffic.
Put it on stairs, railings, floors, cielings, doors, trim and even did a daycare rumpus room... So far it seems to be just about kid / pet and bullet proof...
Cleaned / repaired the dog scratches on a door and jamb.. Painted same and covered it with RxT1... No more scratches.. Dog paw marks wipe off...
Word of warning though... It lists for $166.10 a gallon... Mind you that's list..
