I am in the process of doing a complete bathroom remodel that will include an enclosed shower stall. The style of the new bath is early 1900s – claw foot tub, wainscotting, pedestal sink, etc. So that the shower is not real obvious I am going to frame it in in a corner using a formed base and tiling the walls. To complete the look, I want to use an old door for the shower. OK, I hear you all groaning in unison but hear me out and let me know how bad my idea really is or if can work.
I plan to use an exterior door frame to take advantage of the threshold and weather-stripping keeping the water in the stall. The handle on the inside of the shower will be a flat plate with a magnetic or ball-bearing style latch to allow ease of pushing the door open. I will replace any glass with a tempered pain with a pattern of some kind for privacy. Several coats of exterior or marine grade paint should seal it. Yes? No? Wudda ay think?

To assist with the ambiance you seem to be desire, you may wish to borrow from the tip that Martha Stewart has given for aging terra cotta flower pots. Mix some green algae from the northern wall of your house with plain yogurt and smear it on the shower walls. In less than a week, you'll have achieved the look and smell of a typical old wooden shower stall.
*If the handle on the inside is a flat plate, how do you pull the door closed from the inside?
