I’ve been reading some of the replies to posts on dormers here in the forums and I have one main question regarding the width of a dormer.
I would like to add a gable dormer to the building I’m constructing. The building is 30’x30′ and I’m using 2×8 rafter spaced 24″. The slope of the roof will be 8in12. What would be an acceptable dormer width without using a ridge beam to account for the opposite rafters pushing?
Thanks in advance

2x8 @ 24" oc is already overspanned for that size roof IMO
There other ways of engineering a roof structrue to account for a wider dormer, but if you did have properly sized rafters, and built a six foot wide dormer, you would not change anything. You would be simply moving two rafter over - one each way.
The other thing you have to calc for is that too wide of a dormer, with the same pitch roof will put your dormer ridge higher than the main ridge for a very ugly appearance.

I think some of the newbies don't click on the option to be notified in their mail when someone replies to their post.
When they see no reply in a couple days they shine it on.
be hating when that happens
