Quick design question….
I’m doubling the size of bedroom closet and would like to use two six-panel interior closet doors to enclose them. One’s already on the closet and the other’s recycled from another renovation. Can I create double doors, which open from the center, without a door jam stuck in the middle? I’d rather use a door style that matches those in the rest of the house rather than purchase sliding or bifolds to do the job. Thanx! Mark

Of course you can. Either both doors will be held closed with magnets; or, one door to be held fixed (magnets, top bolt, other hardware) and becomes the jamb for the other door.

What Phil said is right but theres also another way. Being that theyre closet doors you may not want to bolt and unbolt the door each time you use it so what you can do is buy what looks like a brass roller (ball shape) that is set into a spring loaded plate. Thats screwed into the top of the door corners and another plate that is concave to the shape of the ball gets screwed to the head jamb. When you close the doors the ball pressure locks into the head jamb plate.

What Andy has described is called a ball catch. They come is several sizes and qualities. You'll probably want some that are 1/2" or 5/8" diameter with adjustable pressure sets. Also, take a good close look to be sure both doors match to avoid disappointment. I once went into a clients home to do a project just like this on a short schedule and found that the doors he had picked up (guess where he bought them) were both from different manufacturers and the layout of the panels didn't match. His wife reminded him about that regularly.
Excellence is its own reward!
Phill, Andy & Piffin: I think I've got it! So it sounds like I pull the door locksets out and replace them with dummy knobsets, install the ball catchs and I'm on my way. And thank you for the tip on matching doors. My wife may not hate me when it's done but I'd hate myself!!! Mark
One other option you may want to consider( depending on your priorities) is bommer hinges. They are expensive, but very reliable and aesthetically functional.Imagine,if you will, a restaurant swinging door application and you will understand what I am talking about.Good luck!
